Given the amount of time you spend on your mattress, this can easily become a health hazard without regular cleaning! Dust, dirt, allergens and even dust mites can accumulate over the course of a year if you don’t clean it out twice, with a professional service at least once in between. Here are the do’s and don’ts you need to know about when it comes to cleaning your mattress:
Do work fast!
The longer you allow stains to accumulate, the harder it’ll be to get rid of them. A simple DIY cleaning solution you can try is mixing together equal parts white vinegar and water into a spray bottle. Spray the stain until it is mildly damp and leave for 5-10 mins. After this, soak up the liquid with some paper towels and spread baking soda on the stain. Let this sit for an hour or two, and vacuum it up! For more severe stains, you might have to opt for upholstery shampoo.
Don’t wet it too much
Mattresses tend to be pretty great at absorbing stuff (hence, what got you into this mess!). If you use too much liquid when cleaning, chances of mould developing is quite high if any of it remains in the mattress. Use a limited amount of cleaning solution and give your fabric plenty of time to dry in the sun after. You can also use fans, hairdryers or vacuum cleaners to help get all that remaining moisture out.
Do be careful with chemical cleaners
Certain strong commercial cleaners have bleaching qualities. Not only is this a health hazard for you, but bleach can also damage your fabric and leave an irritating smell behind. We recommend looking for alternative cleaners or sticking to homemade solutions. At Inhouse Connections, we use our very own tested, odorless products that are 100% sustainable and safe if you need professional assistance.
Don’t leave your mattress unprotected
Getting a mattress protector will significantly help with maintenance. Some are water-proof too, so you wouldn’t have to worry about scrubbing stains anymore! Keep in mind that your mattress protector and linen will still need frequent washing, however.
Despite all this, enlisting the help of a professional will ensure you clean out the deepest crevices of your mattress. Call us today if you need more assistance!
